about melyoga

There is a common perception that in order to practice yoga you must be flexible, fit, and constantly ingesting green smoothies and salads. I also fell into this trap at the start of my yoga journey, and it is indeed the focus for a large part of the yoga industry we see in the global north today. However, this is not what yoga is really about. Your flexible ability, body shape, and level of fitness aren’t important when it comes to having a ‘good’ and enjoyable yoga practice.  What is important, is learning how to identify your body’s  current needs, and willingly stepping towards making any necessary changes.

Everyone’s body is unique. This means each person’s skeletal and muscular systems are built differently, and therefor require different kinds of attention. Embracing these differences and celebrating them is what is at the core of Melyoga, and it is what will help you get the most out of our yoga classes together.

why the honey bee?

‘Mel’ derives from the Latin ‘honey’ (hence the logo’s honeybee!). The honeybee will drink a flower’s nectar and in doing so transfer the pollen it has previously collected from other flowers. This fertilises the different plants it visits, which enables them to produce their fruits and seeds. Having a consistent yoga practice will support you in being present and kind towards yourself, but it will also allow you to bring joy to those around you. So as the honeybee contributes to the growth of fruits and seeds, you too will bring support to the people in your life, simply by taking care of yourself!

meet your teacher

Hello and welcome to Melyoga! My name is Meli and I’m a yoga teacher based in Devon. I completed my 200hr Yoga Teacher Training in Power Yoga with The House of Yoga, London (Yoga Alliance Accredited), and have since gone on to teach restorative yoga and meditation.

In 2018, I began my training as an actor at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts). During this time I suffered frequently from anxiety and panic attacks, and discovered that yoga was an incredibly helpful tool for calming down my nervous system and keeping me grounded. Now, years down the line and after hundreds of hours spent on the mat both training and exploring my own self-practice, my mental health has drastically improved. Through experiencing first hand the physical and mental benefits of yoga, I wish to share this discovery with others in the hope that they too can draw some nourishment and strength from the power of yoga.

We’ve all had to make changes and adjustments recently - for many this hasn’t been easy. Through my classes, I aim to create a comfortable and nurturing environment to help you find more confidence and ease in your everyday lives.

Looking forward to seeing you on the mat!

Love,

Meli xXx
